NIF Number Assistance for Foreign Residents in Spain

The NIF (Número de Identificación Fiscal) is your Spanish tax ID — the number that appears on every invoice, tax return, and contract with the Spanish tax agency. Here's how it works for US and UK citizens and how it connects to your NIE.

We confirm whether your existing NIE is correctly activated as a tax NIF, prepare and file your Modelo 030 registration, and coordinate the paperwork with the Agencia Tributaria on your behalf.

Third-party disclaimer: Spain Relocation is an independent consulting firm. We are not a Spanish government body, embassy, or consulate. We assist clients in preparing and submitting NIF-related registrations as authorized representatives — we do not issue tax identification numbers ourselves; that is done exclusively by the Agencia Tributaria (Spanish tax agency).

What the NIF is and who needs it

For Spanish nationals, the NIF is simply their DNI number. For foreign individuals, including US and UK citizens, your NIE serves as your NIF once you are registered in the Spanish tax system — there is no separate number to memorize. You'll need an active NIF to file Spanish tax returns, issue or receive invoices as a freelancer or business owner, register a company, or complete most notarized transactions such as buying property.

Companies and other legal entities receive a different format of NIF (starting with a letter rather than reflecting an individual's NIE), which is relevant if you're setting up a Spanish business rather than acting as an individual.

Eligibility and how NIF relates to NIE

If you already hold an NIE, you don't apply for a brand-new tax number — your NIE becomes your NIF the moment you're registered with the Agencia Tributaria, typically through a Modelo 030 registration (census declaration) or automatically when you file your first tax return. Where clients most often run into friction is timing: if you obtained your NIE years ago for a one-off purpose (like a past property purchase) and never registered as a tax resident, you may need to update or reactivate your tax registration before it functions correctly as an NIF for new purposes like autónomo registration.

For a full walkthrough of how the two numbers differ, see our NIE Number page.

What we help with

We help clients confirm whether their existing NIE is correctly activated as a tax NIF, prepare and file the Modelo 030 registration, and coordinate the tax-side paperwork alongside related steps like Autónomo Registration and Beckham Law applications, where a correctly activated NIF is a prerequisite. See our team page for background on who handles these filings.

FAQ

Do I need a separate application to get an NIF if I already have an NIE?

No separate number is issued. Your existing NIE becomes your NIF once you register with the Agencia Tributaria, most commonly via Modelo 030. It's a registration step, not a new ID.

USAs a US citizen, do I need an NIF to file US taxes on Spanish income?

Your NIF is a Spanish tax identifier and doesn't replace your US Social Security Number or ITIN for IRS purposes. If you're a US citizen earning income in Spain, you'll typically need to manage both a Spanish NIF for local filings and your usual US tax reporting obligations — these are two separate systems.

UKDoes my UK National Insurance number work as an NIF in Spain?

No. A UK National Insurance number has no standing with Spanish authorities. British citizens need a Spanish NIE, activated as an NIF, for any Spanish tax matter — the UK number is only relevant to UK tax and benefits systems.

Do freelancers (autónomos) need an NIF before registering?

Yes, an active NIF is required before completing autónomo registration, since your invoices and tax filings are tied to that number from day one. See our Autónomo Registration page for the full process.

What's the difference between an individual NIF and a company NIF?

An individual NIF for a foreign resident is simply their NIE number. A company NIF (CIF in older terminology) is a distinct number assigned to a Spanish legal entity when it's incorporated, starting with a letter that identifies the type of entity.
